In a first arrangement, a plurality of circumferentially spaced apart cylindrical holes are provided in the shank. The drill bit body has a radially outer cylindrical surface that engages the shank so that the cylindrical holes, which are circumferentially aligned, receive screws that secure the bit body to the shank. This first securing arrangement is advantageous in that it is strong and is simple to manufacture. In a second arrangement, a plurality of cylindrical boreholes are formed in a portion of the bit shank which is outwardly of the bit body and which overlies the cylindrical hole in the bit body. The cylindrical boreholes are generally circumferentially aligned and receive screws which secure the bit body to the shank. This second arrangement is advantageous in that it is strong and is simple to manufacture. In both arrangements, a central bore is provided in the bit body which communicates with the exterior of the bit body. To facilitate rotation of the bit body relative to the holder, the central bore is normally larger in diameter than the cylindrical hole through the bit body. The drill bit can be inserted into a drill string and pressed down the bore of the drill string to form a borehole. The bit is then rotated about its longitudinal axis to displace cuttings. In the drilling process, the drill bit may cut or abrade the wall of the borehole, leaving wear debris and abrasion products. This particulate material is usually entrained in the drilling mud and carried to the surface of the earth. In certain formations, such as shale, in which the drilled borehole is relatively narrow, the cuttings may form a bridge around the bit, causing the drill string to become stuck. Once the drill string is stuck, a "
